Christmas 2019

We had such a wonderful Christmas. My parents, Dan's parents, and both of Dan's brothers all traveled to us for Christmas. It was so nice not going anywhere this year - especially since I didn't have many days off because of maternity leave. And was so wonderful having everyone together. Can we do this more often?

The girls made gingerbread houses and visited Santa a million times. Olivia wanted a ball pit and Emma wanted a watch. I hope their wishes always stay this simple. Christmas morning was magical and we managed to spread presents out ALL day. The last gift was opened at 6:30pm.

Sloan - Five Months

Sleep: Still sleeping through the night with a 3 hour nap in the afternoon. Still our best sleeper.

Eating: She drinks 8 ounces about 5 times a day.

Milestones: Still not rolling over or sitting. She is getting really good at using her hands - putting her paci back in her mouth. Her head control is great so she loves her excersaucer. She has also started blowing raspberries and thinks she is the coolest. This little girl smiles with her whole face and at everyone. She got to try some sweet potatoes at thanksgiving and LOVED them. And she's still spitting up constantly.

Clothes / Diapers: She is in 9 month clothes and size 3 diapers.

Best Moment of the Month: Probably when she first tried sweet potatoes. Our ped said to go slow on solids since she has had so many issues with dairy and reflux. We gave her just a little before starting solids fully at 6 months. She lit up. She started panicking, waving her hands for more. She is our little piggy.

Parent of the Month: Probably goes to me for feeding her sweet potatoes (with brown sugar) as her first food.

Favorites: Sloan loves Sophie the giraffe, her baby mirror, her excersaucer, and her big sisters. She can just contently watch her sisters run around, scream and play all day. She loves when they pay attention to her.

She has these Aiden and Anais breathable lovie blankets that she just rubs on her face to fall asleep. And we also love having her owlet smart sock that tells us that shes breathing fine. When she was very little, we went to the lake and slept in the room with her. We could hear her choking all night long on her spit up. So relieved to have the owlet, just in case.

Thanksgiving 2018

Wonderful Thanksgiving with my parents in town. The girls had their own champagne, which they loved, and a tablecloth that they could color on. Emma insisted that her dinner be served on a teacup saucer - she's only moderately high maintenance.

And Sloan got to try a bite of sweet potato puree.

Four Months - Olivia, Emma & Sloan

In this mash-up, I think Sloan resembles Olivia. So sweet to watch her grow and see how she is like her big sisters.

Sloan - Four Months

Height: 25 1/4 inches (80%)
Weight: 15 pounds (60%)

Sleep: Completely sleeping through the night! The best! She also takes a pretty stellar afternoon nap for Dan, and a semi-stellar one for me. I like to think I'm the more fun parent, and she wants to hang out with me more.

Eating: She drinks 8 ounces about 5 times a day.

Milestones: Still not rolling over. She is getting better with her hands and getting toys near her mouth. Her head control is pretty good, so she's been able to use her sit-me-up seat and a little time in the exersaucer. She is so smiley and laughs so hard. She is just the sweetest happiest baby ever.

Clothes / Diapers: Size 3 diapers and 9 month clothes. She's a big baby.

Best Moment of the Month: When I noticed how much she lights up when she sees Olivia. Those two have such a special bond and it is the greatest to see.

Parent of the Month: This isn't really parent of the month - but when I took her to her four month visit, she had eaten 2 hours prior (ie not recently). When we got in the room, she just spit up ALL over the floor. I faced her to the floor, so she wouldn't get me all wet. Then I started cleaning it up when the Dr came in. He said he would help and got down on the floor. Sloan puked again - again, I angled her to the floor. He went to get more towels. She puked again. He just grabbed a big sheet and laid it over the entire floor in the room and said "well just have to mop after she leaves." He is not concerned about how much she pukes. :) And he definitely witnessed it first hand. I was mostly proud that I didn't have to change clothes.

Favorites: Sloan LOVES sophie the giraffe. She loves her pacis. We love the ones that glow in the dark. She's in the swaddleme sleepsacks that are so soft. She's too tall to get much support from the bumbo, so the sit me up seat has been good for her. And bibs. Tons and tons of bibs.

We've all agreed that this is the most fun age and we never want her to get any bigger.

Halloween 2018

This was a fun Halloween. Someone in our neighborhood always hosts everyone for dinner. This year, it was us! The weather was great, so we had everyone over in our front yard - redneck style. Our neighbor did the grilling - and we had hotdogs, sides, drinks and fire pit in the driveway. The kids all went trick or treating ALL evening.

Sloan had to head back to bed early, so Dan kept going with the big kids. They got so much candy - I had to take a few bags to work. Emma wore her Belle shoes for awhile - then eventually kicked them off and walked around in her socks. At the end of the night, she was dragging her pumpkin bucket, walking in her socks and a lady was trying to get rid of her candy. She said "little girl, do you want some candy?" and Emma looked at her, worn out, and said "no! I have too much candy!" the lady said, "me too, honey, me too."

Sloan was supposed to be a flamingo. But it was too hot for her super puffy fleece flamingo costume - so she never even wore it. Just had the neon pink striped tights and black tee shirt.

Olivia's 5th birthday party

Olivia knew she wanted her party at Sports Connection. Theres a bouncy house room and a game room that she likes best. We did 1 hour in the bouncy house room, pizza and cake, and then gave the kids cards to spend in the game room. We grabbed some pitchers of beer for the parents. Although many parents joked about 10am being too early for beer, most partook and then continued to drink while their kids were entertained in the game room. Seemed to be a big hit for both the kids and parents.

First, Olivia just knew she wanted a mermaid theme - so we sent out mermaid invitations. Then, she saw a minnie mouse table topper and remembered that I had a minnie mouse party when I turned 5 and she just NEEDED minnie mouse decor. Then, she saw an Elena of Avalor cake and she just KNEW she had to have an Elena cake at her part - AND a custom Elena t-shirt with her name on it. THEN she saw unicorn goodie bags so she HAD have unicorn themed goodie bags with flip sequin snap bracelets.

Then - the day of, she decided she wanted to wear her blue dress instead of the custom Elena t-shirt.

LOL - you do you girl.

She also needed a "5" balloon and then Emma chose to sit at the head of the table. Haha!

And for dinner, she requested her favorite meal, lunchables.

Three Months - Olivia, Emma & Sloan

They look like sisters. And this month I'm thinking she's leaning more like Olivia. But the most noticeable difference - is that cameras have gotten a lot sharper.

Monday, October 15, 2018

Olivia is Five!

Five. Five is responsible, loves homework, has her own craft box and loves art. Five can draw almost anything she sees. Five loves babies and her baby sister is smitten with her. Five acts tough when Emma messes with her stuff, but then cries when apart from Emma because she misses her. Five is caring. Five is incredibly independent but always wants to be with her friends and family. Five loves parties and candy more than anyone. Five scrolls through Pinterest to come up with party decorations and games. Five is smart. Five is always listening even when you think a conversation might be over her head. Five can ride a bike with two wheels and swim completely across the pool. Five is the biggest helper. Five is such an easy age and we couldn't love our big girl any more!

Sloan - Three Months

Height and Weight: I have no idea. We haven't been to the doctor and I never got around to weighing or measuring her myself.

Sleep: Oh my gosh she is the best baby. She sleeps through the night about half of the nights and one night waking the other half. Its a miracle!

Eating: She drinks 5 ounces about 7 times a day.

Milestones: Still not rolling over. She's such a chill baby that she is a little lazier than the other two. She has started laughing some and holding on to things with her hands.

Clothes / Diapers: Size 2 diapers and 6 month clothes. She's a big baby.

Best Moment of the Month: Definitely her first belly laugh. Dan had gotten her to laugh that morning and showed me when he got home from work. I got it on video and it is just the cutest ever. She has the biggest mouth out of my babies and I just love that half her face is a grin!

Parent of the Month: Probably when I went to pick up Sloan from daycare and left her carseat at home. I just had the base. I had loaded everyone in the car. And had no one left to watch the girls. So Dan had to leave work to help.

Favorites: SLOANY!! She is literally the best baby in the whole wide world. She is so happy always. She's a good sleeper. You can set her down on the floor to clean up your toddler's pee and she does not care. She is happy anywhere. Loves to be squished and tugged and rubbed by her big sisters. She loves attention, but is happy to just be part of the action. With the older two, I was excited to see them crawl, walk, talk, etc. With Sloan, I don't want her to do any of these things. I want her to stay this age forever. If she stayed this age forever, we wouldn't need any more kids, and we would always have a baby around. She does still puke a lot, so I'm okay with her growing out of that.

The first two months with 3 kids was really hard for me. I guess I thought one and two were so easy that it threw me for a loop having to adjust to three. Month three we got into a great routine, Sloan was sleeping more, and everything settled perfectly into place. It is still more chaos than with 2, but it is so much fun!

We love the A&A burpy bibs. Sloan loves Sophie the Giraffe - which was funny because it wasn't Olivia or Emma's favorite. She is definitely a fan of her paci.  But she's mostly just happy hanging out outside with the big sisters. And I am happiest holding her. And she'll probably never learn to walk.

Two Months - Olivia, Emma, and Sloan

They all have similar features, but you can tell they are each their own person. I'm not sure Sloan will look like either one of them anymore.

Sloan - Two Months

Height: 23.5 inches
Weight: 12 pounds 5 ounces

Overall, she's about 80% for height and weight. Not the linebacker that she used to be - but still pretty big.

Sleep: Sloan is by far our best sleeper. I guess if I had to have two horrible and one good sleeper, I'd have the third be the good sleeper. She is down to one night wake up to eat, eats quickly and goes right back down. Incredible!

Naps are not great. She is still napping swaddled in that LeachCo Podster - but mostly only gets her morning nap in it. I will take night sleep over naps though!

Eating: Not much to say here - except, yes she's eating. We haven't done the bottle much. Too much work with everything else going on. Daycare will probably be the ones to teach her, and I'm sure it'll be an adjustment the first week.

Milestones: Not much to say here either. She talks and coos and it is the sweetest thing ever. She smiles so big that she looks like she is laughing but no sound comes out. She is definitely the smiliest baby. It's hard to put her down at night or for naps because she just looks up at you and smiles. I could listen to her sweet sounds and coos all day. Not much progress in head control / rolling over. We don't do tummy time nearly enough for her - but she will get there, I know it. And she uses her hands - very clumsily, but you can tell she's trying to touch things.

Clothes / Diapers: She's pretty much moved into 6 month. Some 3 month stuff still fits - but most of it is too short.

Best Moment of the Month: We've had a million great moments. Sloan slept through the night randomly twice this month - so that was great. Olivia learned to ride without training wheels and wanted Sloan to see her do it. Olivia learned to swim - completely swim - tread water - swim in any depths - dive to the bottom - no floatie needed ever - swim - and she can't wait until Sloan can come watch her next year. Emma draws pictures for Sloan and makes sure she is included in everything: "we go to Target? and my baby sister swoney come too?" We are settling into life as a family of 5, and it feels like Sloan has been with us for forever.

Parent of the Month: I'm going to go back to last month for this one - but it was too funny not to share. For Sloan's first doctor appointment, the big girls were in school and Dan and I both went. We got in the car, headed to the doctor and realized we didn't bring a thing! No burp cloth, no diaper bag, no wipes. We dug through Dans huge car and the only thing we could find was a giant, slightly damp beach towel. We brought it. We made a joke about her being a big spitter - and went with it. And then had to ask for a new diaper and some wipes when she needed them. You'd think we were rookies - not packing a single thing for the baby. Whoops!

Favorites: Loving the Love to Dream swaddle - maybe that is why Sloan is a good sleeper? She likes to comfort herself with her hands by her face. A bouncy seat has been very necessary - and the swing keeps her from crying in the evening, and sometimes she will take a cat nap in it! Overall, we don't use a whole lot for her - just tons and tons of burp cloths.

This month we have gotten into a really good routine. Emma is down to less tantrums - I think she's growing up and things are stabilizing into a 'new normal' for her. Sloan is slightly less fussy, which is always helpful. And I am getting sleep - which is key for a more stable environment - haha.

Sloan is just the best baby. She's so sweet. Mostly just cries when she is overtired. I love her so, so much and she just loves her big sisters. They are her biggest cheerleaders and clap for her when she does little things like holding her head up, or moving her hand intentionally. I love seeing this sister trio together!

One Month - Olivia, Emma, & Sloan

Just a quick comparison of all 3. I think she's favoring Olivia more these days. But she is definitely her own person. And definitely got a smaller bow :)

Sloan - One Month

Height: 23.5 inches (98%)
Weight: 10lbs 13 ounces (98%)

Sleep: She is not a bad sleeper. We found out very early that Sloan can't tolerate dairy. It only took a few days for us to see a new baby! She had started refusing to eat - but also wouldn't sleep because of the pain - the same road we went down with Emma. Glad to get that cleared up. We are following Mom's on Call - so that calls for a paci 3 times before feeding to make sure they are hungry and not just in between sleep cycles. Dan has been sleeping in a different room the first few hours - so that I wont hear her wake up and can sleep a solid few hours in a row. Then he comes back to our room and I'm on deck. Very recently she has been making it to 2am and then 6am for feedings (with a few paci's in between). It is hit or miss whether it is easy to get her back down after the 2am. She sleeps in her crib from 9-6. I feel like she's making a lot of progress in the sleep department for a one month old.

Naps are a different story. The morning we can usually get a 45 min nap in. And she gets a nap while in her car seat when picking up the big girls. My parents have been here a lot (+ Dan's paternity leave) to help and that has allowed Sloan to get a nap in someones arms for the afternoon - but I'm not sure how we will handle that one now that they are all gone. Naps were always hard for the big girls too.

Eating: She eats every 3 hours during the day with an additional random feeding in the late afternoon or evening when extra fussy. When she has taken a bottle, she took 3 ounces. She spits up SO MUCH though. Around 10 times per feeding. Its a miracle any of it stays down. But you can tell by her growth, she's doing fine in height and weight. She soaks burp cloths, her outfit, my outfit, her crib sheets. We just started zantac which will hopefully keep her more comfortable.

Milestones: I'm not sure what milestones they are supposed to hit. #thirdkid. She's smiling a lot more, which is so fun. Trying to hold her head up some. She's not as strong as Emma was, but probably comparable to Olivia.

Clothes / Diapers: She never fit into anything newborn. The big girls were 8 pounds and were in newborn for a month. Sloan couldn't even fit into her going home outfit. I had to come home and put all the sweet newborn outfits away - even the few that were brand new. She's getting tight on her 0-3 month clothes, but still in them. I have a feeling we will move to 3-6 here soon. She just started wearing size 2 diapers - which is just crazy to me. We have a giant baby.

Best Moment of the Month: All of the interactions with Olivia, Emma, and Sloan. I knew Olivia was excited, and she loves babies so I knew she would be so sweet and helpful. I wasn't sure Emma really knew what she was getting into. She LOVES her sister. She is so sweet. Always wants to hold her, kiss her, play with her hands and feet. She gives her a paci, wipes her spit up, gets diapers and onesies and wipes and helps change her. She has become the sweetest big sister - and Sloan is so lucky to have such sweet helpers that love her so much.

Parent of the Month: I'm just going to go with my temporary insanity caused by sleep deprivation. I handed Dan a pillow and told him to help me get the swaddle off of her so I could feed her. I also told Dan to "watch the baby in our bed, while I go feed Sloan." Good thing we figured out new sleeping arrangements, or Dan might have had me committed.

Favorites: We love the leachco podster - its just a little pillow that you can put places - including their crib - for them to lounge or sleep in. It has been helpful for getting a little bit longer naps in the crib where we can still use the breathing monitor. We give Sloan a lot of gas drops, and I read the Mom's on Call book every few days - but other than that, we don't use a lot of new things this time.

We are trying the Love to Dream swaddle that allows their arms near their face. I'm not sure it makes any difference in her sleep, but it is easier to change diapers in the middle of the night - so we have been sticking with it.

Sloan likes pacis - another Olivia (not Emma) similarity.

Overall, the first month has been chaos, but with Dan's paternity leave, his parents visiting, and help from my parents, we have survived the first month with 3 kids! We are learning Sloan, and what works for her - and also juggling the needs of the big kids. Once Sloan gets into a good nap pattern - it wont be hard to have all 3. But trying to tend to the big kids, and spend 20 minutes rocking Sloan to sleep - and putting the paci back in every 5 - is just hard. However - once she gets into a good nap pattern, she'll no longer be a newborn and I'll miss all of the curled legs, stretching faces, teeny tiny cheeks, newborn sleepy noises, and full body snuggles on my chest. So we are soaking in the chaos, knowing its short lived.

Shared Girl's Closet

We always knew we wanted them to share a room. We weren't quite sure we could fit all of their clothes in one room. They have a lot clothes and accessories - way more than necessary.

First, the dresser in their room holds all of their accessories, jewelry, chapstick, etc. Plus PJs and Olivia's shorts / pants.

Bows are hanging on both doors. And we actually need to make new longer ribbons because they barely fit. The little cups on the left drawer hold ponytails and clips.

The closet is divided in half. Its hard to see, but theres a red hanging thing that the girls decorated with their names on it. The "shoe organizers" on each side actually hold 10 outfits. I pick out outfits for them to wear - and they use the stool to pick one of them in the morning. Then, when their clock is green they come running out with their clothes for the day. Either on (Olivia) or in hand (Emma). It also makes it really easy for Dan to get them dressed.

The bins on the bottom hold their swimsuits, Emma shorts, their underwear, socks, and their hair brushes. The bin on the top holds extra lovies. And the rest are all open. Those will come in handy for winter accessories, etc.

Lastly, the sides beyond the shoe organizers hold clothes that don't fit them yet, or items I purchase for next season. And the 4 drawer plastic thing on Emma's side holds clothes they have outgrown before I need to pull down the big bin from the attic and put away everything of that size or season.

Shoes are in our laundry room because its right by the door. And outgrown shoes are in organizers under Olivia's bed.

This has been working really well. BUT having less clothes and accessories might work even better ;)

Big Girls Room

This definitely isn't the "end state" of their shared room. But I still wanted to share pictures. Ideally Olivia would be in a twin bed, so the room would have more floor space. And Emma's bed would have one of the black pillows that matches the curtains. But Olivia didn't want to trade her bed, and we were going through a renovation, moving Emma into her room, and bringing home a baby - so we figured that was enough change for her.

We had to replace Olivia's monogram on the door, so I went with these O and E letters. I would love a mini ampersand between them.

The monogram that was above their cribs was moved above their beds. I think its my favorite part of the room. We have their traffic light clock that turns green when they can get up in the morning.

The art that Olivia did on her second birthday was moved over to her wall because Emma can't be trusted.

And, as pretty as a bookshelf would be - the pile of books in the corner is the most practical for keeping all of them put away. Emma has been known to get a book (and put it back!) in the middle of the night when she can't sleep.

It is definitely a tight space - but they only sleep in there. So it works perfectly for now! Tomorrow I'll share their closet and how we fit all of their stuff in here :).

At Home Teeth Whitening: Does it work? (& Giveaway!)

I have to share with you guys the coolest company.

After I got my braces off in highschool, my parents splurged for dentist whitening trays. I loved the results, but definitely had very sensitive teeth for awhile. I used those trays for touch ups (and more sensitive teeth) every few years. Eventually my teeth shifted and the trays no longer fit. But it was way too expensive to get new ones.
I tried the crest white strips and they didn't form to my teeth so left splotchy whitening and more sensitivity.

When smile brilliant reached out, I loved the idea and the price, but was a little skeptical. They send you a kit and fool proof instructions where you make a mold of your teeth and mail it in. Your custom trays arrive a few days later. The custom trays and whitening gels are right around $150, with a few different packages.

The trays fit perfectly! You whiten for 45min - 3hours for anywhere from 7-14 days. It's super easy to do while cooking dinner, getting the kids ready for bed, or watching TV at night.

The best part? There is a desensitizing gel. I was skeptical here too. After whitening, you fill the trays with the gel and leave it on another 15-20 min. It sounded like an unnecessary step, but let me tell you, I have had zero sensitivity through this whole process! It really takes the worst part out of the whitening process.

I can order more whitening tubes for touch ups, with custom trays that fit! And now, for a super up-close picture.

For 15% off your purchase, use coupon code: lovelikecrazy15 They are being incredibly generous and giving away one $149 kit to a reader. To enter, click here! Giveaway is open to USA, Canada, UK and Australia.

Sloan's Birth Story

I loved reading back through Olivia and Emma's and all the things I had forgotten. Hopefully the sleep deprivation hasn't made me forget any key details in one week.

This was the best delivery yet. Sweet Sloany who caused so much pain during pregnancy, at least came out pain free.

As you know, I was on the induction list for the Friday before, but so many people came into the hospital in labor they weren't able to take as many inductions as normal. So began my time on the "wait list." I got a phone call every morning and every afternoon saying "its not likely that we will get you in this shift." I had to keep my phone on me - because if you miss the call, they go down the list.

I cancelled all my future doctor appointments. I couldn't walk well enough to get into the office and it just wasn't worth it for another "I bet she's coming any day" visit - like I had had the past 4 weeks. They called to let me know I needed to be seen - I sort brushed that off a few times.

Thursday rolled around and the afternoon call said to call at 8pm to talk to the night shift people - it was unlikely, but the lady wanted to make sure I didn't get "missed" - whatever that means. I called - they took a message for the induction person to call me back right away. Didn't hear anything. I had 0 hope.

At 10:30pm I took a tylenol pm to hopefully get some sleep, and the phone rang: "can you come right now?" Umm I guess morning isn't an option? "If you don't come now, you go back to the bottom of the list." We're on our way.

I wasn't quite sure what to do with the kids. Backup was always, Dan stays with them, I call when baby was born. My parents had just gotten to Atlanta, and I knew I didn't want them driving all night long. My friend Abby generously offered to be our on-call night person, but she had work in the morning. When I hung up, I saw a text from my parents "we just got back to the lake, just in case." (The lake is 2 hours from us). I called - "welp - come on up!"

Abby came over to watch the girls until my parents got there - she's a godsend - pregnant, work night and she's hanging at our house until 1am.

I felt stupid using the wheelchair for the first time ever into Labor and Delivery ... for a scheduled induction. But I just couldn't walk. We got all checked in and hooked up and they let me know that I would be on antibiotics for 8 hours. WHAT. We thought for sure we would have a baby in 8 hours. It was fine, because my doctor was on call first thing that morning - but I REALLY wanted to sleep and the sleeping pill I took REALLY wanted me to sleep.

The nurse said "try to get some rest, I'll check on you every 30 minutes." I'm sorry - that doesn't seem possible.

They started pitocin around 6 am and I INSISTED on the epidural right away. They advised against it, but since the girls came so fast that I barely got one, I didn't want to risk it. She asked if I had a written birth plan, and I replied "would you like me to write down the word epidural?"

They started the epidural soon after and there was all this talk and instruction that I don't remember at all from the girls. I was in so much pain with them, it was a blur.

The epidural kicked in and the doctor came in to break my water. Super weird thought. But I couldn't feel a thing. I highly recommend an epidural.

We just hung out. Watched contractions on the monitor. They would get stronger and more intense, and then die out for an hour, and start back up. Apparently that is normal. They kept telling me to rest - but the printer paper was low and it sent an alarm, if any fluids were low, it sent an alarm and a cuff took my blood pressure every 15 minutes. A few times it was too low and they had to up fluids. All in all, impossible to rest.

Around 11 am they said it was time to push, but to wait on the doctor. No probs, I have drugs, I can't feel a thing. Twenty minutes of pushing and Sloan was out at 11:57am. Honestly the IV was worse than childbirth.

The cord was tightly wrapped around her neck, so that scared Dan and the doctor for a bit. My doctor had given Dan a lesson in delivering a baby - since Emma came so fast, they both thought Sloan would be delivered on the side of the road. The lesson included slipping the cord over the head if it was wrapped around. Dan was watching as the doctor tried a few times and Dan started to worry. My doctor had to cut the cord instantly to get her undone - so good thing she wasn't born in the Honda Odyssey.

They don't weigh the babies right away - this is new since Emma - for about 8 hours after birth. So we had to wait awhile to find out she was 8 lbs 15.4 ounces, 22 inches long, and her head was wayyy off the charts at 38 centimeters. I think she was fully cooked.

It was the easiest, most peaceful delivery - yet we still got the excitement of rushing to the hospital with no warning.

My parents brought the girls to meet her and they were so excited, proud, and in love! I have never seen Emma so sweet.

House renovation post 2

I wrote this last week, but had trouble publishing it. I'll share final pictures soon.

We are so close to finishing! And it seems like baby girl waited until the house was mostly all back together before coming. Is the high maintenance? Or does she just love her sleep like Dan?

They still need to finish up the flooring in the new room, bathroom, and closet. We have some bathroom fixtures to put in, a few outlets that are missing, and lots of cleaning to do - but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel!

Some more progress pictures before we get to the finished product!
